All we are is dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind

A NADIE PRETENDO COMUNICAR CERTEZA ALGUNA.

A POST-YEHOSHUA RESPONSE

ISRAEL AND THE DIASPORA:
A POST-YEHOSHUA RESPONSE
Steven Bayme

(Symposium in Washington: The future of the past: What Will Become of the Jewish People)
Summary/Abstract (BY PACO FERNÁNDEZ)

The main criticism: Yehoshua should not trivialize the Diaspora, and more specifically the American Jewry. Jehoshuas’ arguments and even accusations are by no means entirely with-out merit:

a. The narrative of Israel has not penetrated the consciousness of young Jews today (in contrast to the narrative of the Holocaust).
b. The high standard of living of the Diaspora in America makes that Jews don’t be a good candidates for aliyah.
c. The growing distancing of Israel occurs as part of a general distancing from matters Jewish.
d. There are different ways of feeling Jew, and this is a symptom of vitality today.
e. The American Jewish significantly contribute to develop the study of the Judaic civilization.
f. Yehoshua errs ignoring the special relationship between Washington and Jerusalem dues to of constant activism of the American Jewish community.
g. Yehoshua ignores time-honored Jewish values of peoplehood and mutual responsibility between Jews. Rather than advocate synergy among all Jews, he challenges American Jews to move to Israel and become serious Jews or stay in the Diaspora and continue to play with Jewishness.
h. The most important task is to expand dialogue and confront common challenges as Jews seeking to give meaning to the concepts of Jewish identity at present.
