Hace años lo aprendí de Albert Camus. Más tarde, unas palabras de Michel Foucault volvieron a recordármelo: No hay que dejarse seducir por las disyunciones, ni aceptar acríticamente los términos del dilema: o bien se está a favor, o bien se está en contra. Uno puede estar enfrente y de pie.

the Yehoshua’s main ideas



1.- Jewish Texts are not good enough to understand the Jewish reality at present. They cannot be the core of the Jewish identitity.

2. .- If the State of Israel had been inmediatly founded after the Balfour Declaration, the conflict Arab-Israeli would have happened with less bloodshed and would have reduced the number of victims in the holocaust.

3.-  The Zionist solution was the best solution to the Jewish problem before the Holocaust.

4.- There is a fundamental boundary between Jewish Israeli identity and Jewish Diaspora identity. This doesn’t mean deny the Diaspora because it is “the most solid fact in Jewish history”.

5. The matter is the Jewish Israeli identity as distinct form Israeli citizenship and Jewish Diaspora identity. He thinks the relation between such two ways of identity interconnected must be well clarified.

6. In Israel, Jewish values are located in the daily reality. Israeli Jews deal with the full spectrum of the Jewish reality while the Diaspora deals with a part of it. The relation between Jews Israeli and Jews of the Diaspora is like that of the whole to the part.

7.- In Israel, Jewish values are not a garment that it can be removed or replaced in times of trouble. It is necessary to develop Israeliness, so we will improve our relations with people inside and outside of Israel: “The more Israeli we are, the better the partnership we have with them. The more we concentrate solely on Jewish spirituality and texts, believing this to be of chief importance, the more the alienation between us grows.”

8. Yehoshua is incensed by the increasingly dangerous and irresponsible disconnection between the glorification of the texts and the mundane matters of daily live. He proposes to nurture the concrete value of the homeland rather than the dull and worn-out value of Jewish spirituality.
